Trees are often described as decoration, but in cities they function like infrastructure. They cool streets, slow rainwater, clean air, soften noise, and make neighborhoods feel more human.

The difference between a shaded street and an exposed street can change how people move. Children are more likely to walk. Elderly residents can rest. Small businesses benefit when sidewalks become comfortable rather than punishing.

Tree planting also raises hard questions. Who gets shade first? Who maintains the trees? Can greening improve a neighborhood without raising costs so much that longtime residents are pushed out?

A serious city plan should treat trees the way it treats roads, drainage, and electricity. They require investment and care. When a city plants and protects trees fairly, it is not only making the streets prettier. It is building public health into the landscape.
